What should I know about the two teams in the Liberty Bowl?
Memphis (10-2, 7-1 in AAC)
The Tigers are bowling for the fourth year in a row, after they didn’t make one from 2009-13. They rose impressively under Justin Fuente and stayed strong under Mike Norvell.
Memphis has a brilliant offense. The Tigers throw the hell out of the ball and have a bunch of good receivers, and the running game isn’t efficient but hits home runs from time to time. This team is a blast to watch and was involved in two of the season’s lower-key great games, both wins: over UCLA in September and over Houston in October.

Iowa State (7-5, 5-4 in Big 12)
The Cyclones were a Big 12 doormat. Now they’re not. They’ve become a legitimate (and legitimately fun) team, with one of the better defenses in the country. Iowa State upset two teams ranked in the top five at the time (Oklahoma and TCU) and along the way became one of the most likable teams anywhere. Their rise this season is one of 2017’s coolest stories.
This is ISU’s first bowl appearance since 2012, when it lost the Liberty Bowl to Tulsa. The team went 3-9 in 2016, Matt Campbell’s first year on the job, and wasn’t supposed to be that much better this year. The transformation here has been swift, and the school signed Campbell to a long-term extension to try to make sure it continues.
